Col (Dr) Ram Athavale has been conducting training and capability development sessions in various aspects of CBRN incident management and response.  With his vast experience and expertise in the subject, his training and capability development sessions are well received and have led to many of his students with enhanced CBRN awareness and urge to study the subject further. 

Some of his important and recent training events are given below :

Post Graduate Diploma in CBRN Protection and National Security at DDSS, SPPU

The first ever CBRN course for civilians was instituted by the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies (DDSS) under the aegis of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), Pune India. The course is titled “Post Graduate Diploma in CBRN Protection and National Security”.   The course has two semesters with three CBRN modules in each. Col Ram Athavale, PhD is the Chief Faculty for the course and the first batch of four students have qualified in Nov 2021. 

 

Due to Covid19 restrictions, the course was conducted in a virtual online format. We look forward to motivating more students to join the next course in 2022.

Master CBRNe Course Level 2, Module 8 at Universty of Rome Tor Vergata – Jan 2020

Col Athavale is a Visiting Faculty at the University of Rome Tor Vergata for the MasterCBRNe Course. The Masters course in CBRN Protection is a well recognised international course endorsed by the UN, OPCW, IAEA and NATO.  In Jan 2020, he undertook six sessions under Module 8 for international students of Masters Course in CBRN Protection, Level 2.  The topics covered were:

 

  • Terrorism Awareness (political violence and radicalisation leading to terrorism)

  • CBRN terrorism

  • Individual and collective CBRNe protection and dress levels

  • Individual, collective and material CBRNe decontamination techniques

  • International non-proliferation initiatives and conventions

  • International CBRNe cooperation initiatives and projects

Workshop on CBRN National Security and Risk Mitigation at Department of Defence and Strategic Studies (DDSS) Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), Pune – Feb 2020.

Dr Ram conducted a three day workshop on CBRN National Security and Risk Mitigation for Students and Faculty of DDSS at SPPU. The workshop was a great success and 52 students and faculty participated. The workshop covered the following issues :

 

  • CBRN Overview – What is CBRN?, agent characteristics

  • CBRN Threats – Natural, Accidental, waste and environmental threats

  • CBRN Terrorism – the threat and some examples

  • Global Initiatives, treaties, Conventions and Cooperation

  • Indian CBRN Paradigm – Governance, Nodal Structure, Laws and Acts

  • Indian CBRN Paradigm – CBRN response agencies, mechanism, risk zoning and mapping of threats

  • CBRN detection technologies and systems

  • Individual and collective CBRNe protection and dress levels

  • Individual, collective and material CBRNe decontamination techniques

  • Medical Management and Hospital Preparedness

  • Societal Security – Psycho-social issues, CBRN Security Culture and Media engagement

  • Table Top Exercise based on a Chemical incident

DEFENCE INDUSTRY INDIGENISATION: OPPORTUNITIES & CHALLENGES

INTEGRATED DISASTER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

Col Athavale conducted classes for many colleges under the Symbiosis International University for their Integrated Disaster Management Program (IDMP) from 2012 to 2015. He taught various aspects of Disaster Management like:

  • Community participation in Disaster Management

  • Psycho-social aspects of Disasters

National seminar on “DEFENCE INDUSTRY INDIGENISATION: OPPORTUNITIES & CHALLENGES”

Col (Dr)Ram Athavale spoke about CBRN Technologies, Trends and Challenges at the  National seminar on “DEFENCE INDUSTRY INDIGENISATION: OPPORTUNITIES & CHALLENGES” organised by Mahratta Chambers of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) and BharatShakti.com on 27 Feb 2020. The talk was well received and appreciated.
